Step 4 of Practice

STEP 4: ELABORATE YOUR TOP STRENGTHS

 

You will continue to:

·      focus on and write daily about your positive moments (Step 1)

·      articulate subjective strengths related to your positive moments (Step 2)

You will practice:

·      elaborating on your top strengths (from Step 3)

Timeframe: ½ hour (10 sessions)  

Method:

     Choose one of your top strengths (from Step 3), and write that strength at the top of a blank page. Freewrite about that strength for 10 to 20 minutes, or until you have filled a page. You can refer to the words in the Step 3 grouping as you write. Your freewriting might include explanation, description, and examples. Examples are very useful in elaborating your strengths to make them clear.

     Internally ask yourself clarifying questions such as:

·      What do I really mean by this?

·      What are the best examples of times when I used this strength?

     Then, edit your writing into a short paragraph. Ask:

·      Would another person understand this?

Repeat this process until you have elaborated each of your top strengths.

Tips to help you practice:

     Pace yourself. A schedule that might feel good would be to elaborate three strengths a week for three or four weeks.

     Schedule a Strengths-focused Dialog. Talk through your elaborations with another person who is working on articulating a Strengths-focused Identity. Connect by joining an AST online course. 

     Celebrate this success. Celebration and self-recognition are reinforcing. Celebrate that you have articulated your strengths-focused identity. You have changed your focus from what is wrong to what is right about you. You have become more aware of the part you play in your positive moments, and more articulate about your strengths. This is an accomplishment to be proud of.
